No Pain, No Gain?

Whether you are training for a marathon, or just looking to become more physically active, it is important to listen to your body. Experiencing muscle soreness upon changing your activity level is normal.

Generally, this soreness occurs within 48-72 hours following activity, and resolves on its own quickly. Doing an activity should never be painful; however, a significant number of people experience pain during or immediately after a long run at some time during their training. It is important to pay attention to early aches and pains before they become a larger issue. The sooner you address an issue, the shorter your recovery time.

So when should you seek professional help? Seek help if you experience:

  • Pain during activity
  • Pain immediately after activity
  • Pain in the joints
  • Swelling or redness around an area
  • Discomfort that does not resolve on its own or is recurring in nature

Train smart, and don’t try to push through discomfort or pain. Your body will thank you.
